WHERE DO THE PARTIES STAND? PCs: Back in 1995 the Conservatives promised to pass the Ontarians with Disabilities Act in their first term. They later pledged it would be a strong, effective law. But they delayed passing anything for 7 years. In 2001 they passed a weak law. It doesn't require barriers to be removed. Municipalities and other public sector organizations are to make accessibility plans, but they don't have to be any good and they don't have to be implemented. The Conservatives rejected amendments that would have made their law strong and effective. They have left part of their weak law unproclaimed almost 2 years later. They promised that Ontario would become barrier-free for Ontarians with disabilities. After 8 years in power, they haven't made significant progress. Under their weak law, we have no idea when or if Ontarians with disabilities will be able to get access to the opportunities that others take for granted. Their election platform doesn't promise to strengthen their weak law. Dalton McGuinty promised in writing that a Liberal Government would strengthen the Ontarians with Disabilities Act within the first year in office to make it strong and effective. Liberals proposed amendments to strengthen the Conservatives' weak law. The Conservatives voted these down. Howard Hampton promised in writing that an NDP Government would strengthen the Ontarians with Disabilities Act within the first year in office to make it strong and effective. The NDP proposed amendments to strengthen the Conservatives' weak law. The Conservatives voted these down.
