Letter to the Honourable Helen Johns
Minister of Citizenship, Culture and Recreation

September 17, 1999

The Honourable Helen Johns,
Minister of Citizenship, Culture and Recreation,
6th Floor, 77 Bloor Street West,
Toronto, Ontario M7A 2R9

Dear Minister,

Re: Ontarians with Disabilities Act

Thank you for agreeing to meet with a delegation from the Ontarians with Disabilities Act Committee on Tuesday September 28, 1999 at your Toronto office at 10:30 a.m. We look forward to discussing with you plans for the forthcoming public consultation on the Ontarians with Disabilities Act. We hope that our proposals for this public consultation process, forwarded last week to the three parties, will give you a head-start in this area. It would be especially helpful if you would be able to let us know at this meeting your target times for key steps including the consultation process and introducing a new bill into the Legislature. We realize that precise dates are not possible, but a target time frame would be most helpful.

Your statement to the London Free Press in its September 11, 1999 edition were very positive. It reports that you said that the Ontarians with Disabilities Act is a huge priority for you and that you hope to have the consultation process announced, if not completed, by Christmas. This should kick off this new round of work on the road to a barrier-free Ontario for all persons with disabilities in a good direction.

Sincerely,

David Lepofsky, CM,
Chair, Ontarians with Disabilities Act Committee
